Utah is home to an ever-growing construction industry and while holding a general construction license allows you to work on residential or commercial structures, to be able to legally install complete warm air heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems, an S350 HVAC Contractor license is required. As with all construction licenses in this region, the Business & Law exam must also be passed.
While the HVAC license does include electrical work, it is not a substitution for the Utah Electrical License.
What type of work can be done with this license?
An S350 HVAC Contractor is licensed to perform or superintend fabrication and installation of complete warm air heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems. This includes the installation of refrigeration equipment (including built-in refrigerators, refrigerated rooms, insulated refrigerated spaces and related equipment.
License requirement
- Two (2) years (at least 4,000 hours) of paid work experience in the construction industry
- Documentation for completion of Approved 25-hour Pre-licensing Course
- Construction Management Degree (2 or 4 year Degree)
- Pass Business and Law exam
** To retain the license, 6 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Utah has no reciprocity agreements.

Does an HVAC technician need insurance?
In Utah, HVAC contractors are required to have general liability and workers compensation insurance. While these do vary on a contractors scope of work, some projects may require additional surety bonds to guarantee performance and payment obligations.
How do I pass the exam?
The Utah exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, Rockert Cert’s online course is not permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, plan reading, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each reference, and unlimited attempts on Rockert Cert’s “test simulation”.
