Every once in a while, something comes along that offers a combination of great fun and practicality. Take a trip back in time to when the bicycle was first invented, for example: they created great excitement and were used – as they still are today – for leisure purposes as well as for commuting and getting from one place to another. The same could be said of the motor car, and of a number of other inventions that we use on a daily basis.
In recent years, the focus has been very much on electric transport, both personal and commercial. There are electric trains, cars, buses and more, but there’s one item that is currently gaining in popularity very quickly. We’re talking about the electric unicycle and it’s cousin, the electric scooter.
What are they all about, and why are they getting so much attention? Let’s have a closer look at these fun, practical and exciting little vehicles.
Why an Electric Unicycle?
The unicycle may seem like an unusual choice of personal transport, but in fact it offers many benefits. First, modern electric unicycles are self-balancing. All the rider needs to worry about is speed, steering and stopping. How do they balance? They use a series of gyroscopes and accelerometers – we won’t go into too much detail here, suffice to say they do the job – to make life a lot easier for you.
Another reason why a unicycle is a clever choice is because, having only one wheel, it is surprisingly compact – even more so than a scooter. If you’re still thinking about the old style of circus unicycle, click here for pictures of the modern type, and you’ll see they constitute a wheel, a sort of shell around the wheel, and a platform on which you stand.
Are they easy to ride? It’s fair to say that at first, they may take a bit of getting used to – as it does to a bicycle, but without the concern about balancing – but once you get the hang of things, the electric unicycle is a great way of getting around, and excellent fun, too!
Choosing the Best One
So, you’re interested in an electric unicycle or a scooter. There are many different models on the market, so the first thing to consider is what you want it for – is it for leisure or are you looking for a better way of getting around town or to and from work – and how much you are willing to pay. The most basic models are very simple, efficient and will not cost you a great deal. Be aware, however, that there can be great differences in the range they offer, and in the performance.
For example, there’s a model called the MonoWheel V2, which comes in at the lower end of the price range. It’s a simple, basic unicycle that offers speeds of more than 10mph, 18 miles on a full charge, and comes with Bluetooth speakers and a built-in carry handle. It’s favoured by commuters who take a bus or train to the city, then cycle to their place of work.
At the other end of the price range – be prepared to spend around $2000 – the NineBot Z Series can reach 20mph and offers 20 miles range, while the similarly priced Rockwheel GT can reach 30mph and take you 40 miles on a full charge!
Whether you want an electric unicycle or scooter for fun – and really, they are a thrill to ride – or for the commute or other transport, we recommend you check them out, and enjoy your new-found freedom on a single wheel!
